Entry from: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Entry Title: “Peninsular Malaysia” Entry: “Malaysia is a lot different than Thailand. For one, it is a LOT more expensive. There are about 3 Ringit to the US Dollar, which is a much higher exchange rate than the Thai Baht (100 THB = .50). And everything – food, travel, hotels – was just more expensive in general. Secondly, Malaysia is a lot more orderly and cleaner than Thailand. This could be seen as a good thing, but I had actually gotten so used to Thailand’s messiness and ordered chaos that it was somewhat disconcerting. Malaysia also has a very large Dutch, Indian, and Chinese influence. So the architecture and food naturally reflects this. Overall, though, I had a pretty good time. My first stop was Penang, a large island off the northwest coast. The major city on Penang is called Georgetown, which is full of Dutch architecture. I spent one full day on Penang, exploring the town. I went to a Chinese temple, walked around the city, and up to the top of a large hill there, with a good view of the city. Though it is a popular tourist destination, I really didn’t like Penang all that much. It was nice to see different architecture after coming from Thailand, and the food was a good change, but it wasn’t all that lively or interesting. The next day I had a bus
