Dealing with a Road Accident in the Highlands

Article by Debbie Fuller

Aberdeenshire and the Highlands have one of the highest road accident tolls in the UK. The long, winding roads bring out the worst in some drivers who push the limits and endanger themselves and other road users. The extreme weather of the North of Scotland can make driving extremely hazardous, leading to a high volume of road accidents each year.

If you are involved in a road accident in the highlands there are certain steps you can take to ensure that dealing with the accident is kept as easy as possible. The first thing you must do at any road accident is call the emergency services. This may simply involve the police, however if you or anybody else is hurt, you may require the services of an ambulance. It is important if there are people seriously injured that you do not move them. If anyone is suffering from shock you should try to keep them warm, whilst comforting and re-assuring them.

If there are other road users involved in the accident, you must swap insurance details. This is important should you wish to make a compensation claim using a road accident solicitor in Inverness or Aberdeen. Make sure you take note of the other party’s contact details, and record any damage to your vehicle or injuries sustained. If possible take photographs as these will come in handy should you wish to make a compensation claim.

You should contact your next of kin so that someone is aware of what has happened. This will help should someone need to pick you up, or meet you at the nearest police station or hospital.

After any road accident you should contact your insurance company to report the accident. Your insurance company will help you through the necessary steps that need to be made in order to have you vehicle repaired and any costs covered.

If your accident was due to the fault of another driver then you may wish to consider an filing a road accident compensation claim. Road accidents can create a lot of financial strain that may have a devastating impact on your life. Medical bills, vehicle repair, loss of earnings due to time off work are all common problems that occur during the aftermath of a car accident. If this is something that you are experiencing then you may be entitled to making a claim. Your first port of call should be to locate your nearest solicitor. In the highlands your best options would be to contact solicitors in Inverness or Aberdeen.

Road accidents can be devastating, but by taking the time to ensure you deal with it correctly, you could save yourself a lot of time, energy, and money. The simplest step one can do is to drive carefully and responsibly at all times. The Highland roads may seem quiet and less dangerous than those of the inner cities, but the statistics speak for themselves. Don’t risk your life and the life’s of others, drive safely.
